Contaminated soils behind the Red Barn

Baie-D'Urfé, August 2, 2018 - The Town of Baie-D'Urfé would like to reassure the population following the excavation of contaminated soil during the excavation work for the Red Barn multipurpose surface project.

Contrary to what was conveyed in social media and on the Web, the Town reacted immediately when the contractor discovered a small quantity of contaminated soil excavated for a basketball post foundation and took all necessary measures to ensure the health and safety of citizens and the environment. Under no circumstances were they ever threatened.

Actions taken by the Town

We asked an independent laboratory to analyze the soil samples taken on the site in order to know the nature of the contamination and how to dispose of the soil according to all laws and regulations in force.

In addition, the city carried out additional excavation work under the supervision of the independent laboratory to measure the extent of the contamination. The conclusion is that contaminated soils are limited to those that have been excavated by the contractor for the basketball post foundation.

Consequently, the Town asked the contractor to dispose of the soils in accordance with the law.

The work should resume next week after construction holiday is over and we expect it to be completed by August 18.
