Fireplaces and wood-burning stoves
Changing a fireplace insert requires a permit.
With the new regulation regarding wood burning, the Town must be advised of changes done in your residence as a function of By-law 877.
No building shall have as its principal heating system a solid-fuel-burning device or fireplace installed after 2017.
Any secondary heating system must be certified by the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) or CAN/CSA-B415.1 (Performance Testing of Solid-Fuel-Burning Heating Appliances).
Effective July 1, 2022, no solid-fuel-burning device may be used or allowed to be used, unless it is certified by the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) or CAN/CSA-B415.1 (Performance Testing of Solid-Fuel-Burning Heating Appliances) except when there is an electrical power outage lasting more than 3 hours affecting the building.
An indoor open flame fireplace or a solid wood burning device may still be used occasionally; but, is prohibited during smog alert days!
