Monarch-Friendly Town

The Town of Baie-D’Urfé is proud to receive the Monarch-Friendly City certification from the David Suzuki Foundation. This certificate confirms the Town’s commitment to preserving monarch habitat with 18 specific actions. Here is a list of some of the many actions that the Town of Baie-D’Urfé has committed to undertake this year and next as part of this program:

  • Protecting the monarch butterfly and its habitat
  • Free distribution of milkweed seeds to residents at public events
  • Monarch-Friendly demonstration garden
  • Native nectar plantation in median strip or on public rights-of-way
  • Increase the percentage of native plants and trees to be included in city landscaping plans

The municipality’s commitments will contribute to the protection and restoration of monarch habitat and will encourage our citizens to participate in this effort.

Since the launch of the initiative, more than 340 mayors and municipal leaders have committed to helping save monarchs in North America, including more than 80 in Quebec.

Let us remember that the monarch butterfly is an endangered species; its population has dropped drastically over the past two decades. Scientists attribute this decline to the degradation and loss of breeding habitat. However, municipalities can play a key role in protecting the habitat of this iconic butterfly and helping to save this species.

To encourage municipalities to take specific action to protect the monarch butterfly, the David Suzuki Foundation, in partnership with Espace pour la vie Montréal, Launched the Monarch-Friendly City initiative in Quebec, which aims to implement measures to restore monarch habitats and raise public awareness.
