Try leafcycling this fall!

Want an effortlessly greener lawn? Try leafcycling this fall!

Leafcycling means leaving dead leaves on your lawn and simply mowing over them. Rather than removing them, you can use them as a natural fertilizer.  When they decompose naturally, dead leaves are a valuable asset for the soil! Leaves enrich the layer of organic matter that protects roots and retains water, reducing the lawn's susceptibility to drought and the need for watering. As they decompose, they provide the minerals plants need to get through the winter and grow vigorously in the spring.

What are the benefits?

  • Saves time - No more raking and bagging leaves
  • Saves money - Fewer bags and less chemical fertilizer to buy
  • Saves water - Preserves soil moisture, reducing the frequency or even the need for watering
  • Protecting the environment and reducing greenhouse gases

How does it work?

  • Spread the leaves in a thin, even layer, if necessary, before shredding them
  • Run the mower (ideally with a shredding blade) over the dry leaves as soon as they start to fall. Grass blades should remain visible through the leaf pieces.

Please note: Unshredded leaves can smother your lawn and lead to disease, whereas leafcycling will give your lawn vigour!

Why waste this natural resource? Together, let's leafcycle!
