Tax Credit for Bringing Septic Systems Up to Standard

Published on February 2, 2026

You may be eligible for a refundable tax credit for bringing residential wastewater treatment systems up to standard if, among other things, the following conditions are met:

  • you were a resident of Québec on December 31 of the taxation year for which the credit is claimed (or on the day you ceased to be a resident of Canada);
  • you or your spouse entered into an agreement, after March 31, 2017 and before April 1, 2027, with a qualified contractor to carry out work on residential wastewater treatment systems (septic systems) for an eligible dwelling (generally, a dwelling located in Québec that you own and that is your principal place of residence, or, under certain conditions, a cottage that you own);
  • the expenses incurred for this work were paid in the taxation year for which the credit is claimed.

This tax credit applies only to taxation years 2017 to 2027.

The maximum tax credit that may be granted for an eligible dwelling over this period is $5,500.
