Spring Thaw and Sump Pump Inspection
Published on March 25, 2019
Sump pumps are devices that help keep properties safe from water damage. When a storm occurs or during spring thaw, sump pumps remove excess water around the foundation. Early maintaining and testing of your sump pump ensures that it works properly when needed. Only a few minutes are required to insure proper functioning.
Here are the following recommendations to avoid any flooding problems in your home:
- After locating the exit pipe, which drains out water from the pump outside the home, it should be inspected to ensure it’s not clogged with dirt or debris. Any debris found inside the pump should be removed to ensure the pump will not clog. The sump pump is usually installed in the basement or a crawlspace, near the walls of the foundation.
- Change your sump pump every 10 years. Consider using a high-quality submersible pump. Submersibles run cooler than traditional pumps, are quieter and lack a drive shaft, which is a weak point in the traditional design.
- Check your sump pump every fall and in early spring.
- Change your hot water tank every 10 years.
- Consider a back-up generator, but bear in mind that most power outages are short, many occur while the sump pump is not needed, and generators must be used regularly, or they are unlikely to start in any emergency situation.
