Rediscovering Baie-D’Urfé: A Historical Journey Through Archaeological Supervision
Published on April 11, 2024
The old meets the new as renovations to the Baie-D’Urfé Town Hall have uncovered a rich tapestry of history beneath its foundations. The archaeological inventory and supervision carried out by Patrimonia Archéologie reveal layers of indigenous presence, European colonization, and local life stretching back thousands of years.
A Fusion of Heritage and Progress
The project, necessitated by expansion and renovation plans of the Baie-D’Urfé Town Hall, became a window into the past. In January 2022, the Town decided to proceed with Patrimonia Archéologie's meticulous supervision of the excavations, demonstrating a commitment to preserving and respecting the site’s historical significance.
Ancestral Footprints on Modern Ground
Archaeologists uncovered artifacts from the Archaic period, around 5,000 years ago, signaling an indigenous presence long before European settlers. Among these were projectile points and fragments of tools, testament to a human occupation that resonated with the rhythms of the seasons.
The site also revealed European influences, with relics from the 17th century that pointed to the fur trade and early settler life. The remains of a mid-18th-century farmhouse and bread oven painted a picture of the early Euro-Canadian domestic life that thrived in the area.
Embracing the Past, Building the Future
As Baie-D’Urfé looks to the future, the remnants of its past offer stories that enrich its heritage. Among these, the archaeological finds will be showcased in a dedicated display at Town Hall, bridging the gap between our days and those long gone. This effort is more than a nod to history; it's a commitment to honor the layers of life that have sculpted the Town, ensuring the past continues to inform our journey ahead.
