Home Theft Prevention

Published on October 22, 2021

It has been brought to our attention that home thefts have recently taken place on the territory of our town. Police officers from the Service de police de Montréal (SPVM) were able to proceed last night with the arrest of an individual who broke into a residence earlier this week to steal valuables.

We are taking the situation seriously and the SPVM is maintaining a regular presence of its police officers on the streets of Baie-D'Urfé. Although our town remains a safe place to live in, we invite citizens to be vigilant and we recommend, along with the SPVM, to follow these prevention advices:

- Remain vigilant at all times; call 911 to report any prowler or person behaving suspiciously.

- Install a security system to alert your neighbourhood of intruders; make sure you lock doors and activate the alarm system when you are away.

- Make sure exterior exits are well lit. Avoid bushes, trees or fences that hide your home; they could provide a hiding place for thieves; install an automatic timer for lighting, it is inexpensive and easy to install.

During long-term absence:

- Leave interior lights on and if possible, a vehicle in the driveway.

- Notify neighbors of your absence, ask that your mail be picked up, your lawn mowed or your driveway cleared of snow. Cancel newspaper subscriptions.

- Be sure to keep jewelry and valuables in a safe place.

- Avoid posting pictures of your home, jewelry or valuables on social networks and online auction sites

- Avoid publicly disclosing your absence and the duration of your absence (social networking sites, real-time travel photos, answering machines, out-of-office e-mail messages, etc.).

Be aware that citizens can, at any time, contact their local police station to identify points of vulnerability in their residence and the measures to be taken to address them.
