End of Water Fluoridation in Baie-D’Urfé?

Published on September 27, 2024

The City of Montreal is planning to end water fluoridation by the end of 2024, without any public consultation. This decision has been made unilaterally, and demerged towns like Baie-D'Urfé have not been consulted.

Since 2020, Montreal has been working on this issue, and unfortunately, this reflects yet another instance of the lack of consideration within the Montreal agglomeration for the demerged towns. Baie-D'Urfé is now faced with a decision imposed by Montreal, which holds a majority of votes at the agglomeration council.

The Regional Directorate of Public Health (DRSP) continues to recommend water fluoridation, calling it one of the few proven and universal preventive dental health interventions. Fluoridation supports oral health and helps reduce social health inequalities, as highlighted by both INSPQ (2022) and CADTH (2019) studies. The costs of fluoridation are largely subsidized by the Ministry of Health and Social Services, amounting to only $100,000 annually for all the water produced by the Pointe-Claire and Dorval plants.

The Town of Baie-D'Urfé has never requested the cessation of water fluoridation. We understand that this decision raises concerns among our residents, and we encourage those who oppose it to make their voices heard.

If you wish to express your discontent, we invite you to write directly to Ms. Maja Vodanovic, responsible for water at the Executive Committee of the City of Montreal, at: maja.vodanovic@montreal.ca, and to Ms. Valérie Plante, Mayor of Montreal, at: mairesse@montreal.ca.

Additionally, you can submit your questions to the agglomeration council through the following link: Submit a question to the agglomeration council

The Baie-D'Urfé Town Council will address this matter at the next council meeting and will vote on a resolution requesting that the City of Montreal maintain water fluoridation.

We appreciate your understanding and support.
