Septic Tank Emptying – A Few Recommendations
Published on November 2, 2026
The annual septic tank emptying period has now ended. The Town thanks you for your cooperation and for helping this operation run smoothly.
If you would like a copy of your septic tank emptying report, you can request one by emailing environnement@baie-durfe.qc.ca.
Large amounts of toilet paper in some tanks
During the emptying season, we observed that several septic tanks contained a significant amount of toilet paper that had not sufficiently broken down.
Toilet paper is primarily made of cellulose, an organic material that can be broken down by the microorganisms present in a septic tank. However, this process depends on factors such as the type and quantity of paper and the conditions within the tank. Excessive amounts of paper can contribute to the buildup of solids and, in some situations, lead to plumbing problems or affect the operation of the septic system.
To reduce the risk of clogging and help keep your system working properly, the Town recommends:
- choosing toilet paper that breaks down quickly and is compatible with septic systems;
- avoiding very thick or multi-ply toilet paper that is harder to break down;
- never flushing products that are not designed to be disposed of in toilets, including wipes, even when they are labelled “flushable”;
- following the maintenance and emptying recommendations applicable to your septic system.
A septic tank relies on a natural process of separation and biological breakdown of waste. However, solids that have not sufficiently broken down gradually accumulate at the bottom of the tank and must be removed during emptying. A significant amount of undecomposed paper observed during emptying is therefore something to monitor.
The Town encourages you to adopt good practices to keep your septic system working properly and avoid plumbing problems.
