Pedestrian Safety for Walkers
Published on November 17, 2020
WEAR BRIGHT COLORS EVENING OR NIGHT
Wear bright clothing or a reflective vest to be visible. Especially avoid dark colors! Often times, drivers don't expect walkers to exit after dark, and you need to give them every chance to see you.
WALK IN THE REVERSE DIRECTION OF TRAFFIC
If there is no sidewalk and you have to walk on the side of the road, choose the side where you face oncoming traffic. In North America, this is the left side of the road. This gives you the best chance of seeing the cars approaching.
DON'T COVER YOUR EARS!
Especially when listening to music through your headphones. Keep the volume at a level where you can hear motorist warnings.
Be vigilant at all times!
