Coyotes: Prevention and Safety Tips
Published on July 9, 2026
The Town has received reports regarding the presence of coyotes within the community. To help ensure everyone's safety, residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and follow the prevention measures recommended by the Ministère de l'Environnement, de la Lutte contre les changements climatiques, de la Faune et des Parcs.
Here are a few recommendations:
- Do not feed coyotes, intentionally or unintentionally.
- Secure garbage, compost, bird seed and pet food to eliminate potential food sources.
- Keep cats indoors whenever possible and keep dogs on a leash, particularly at dawn and dusk.
- If you encounter a coyote, remain calm, make yourself appear large, make noise (clap your hands or shout), and slowly back away. If the animal does not retreat, you may throw a small object, such as a stick or a rock, in its direction to encourage it to leave.
- Never approach, corner or attempt to feed a coyote.
If you observe several coyotes together in an area frequented by the public, or if a coyote displays unusual behaviour such as showing no fear of humans or acting aggressively, report the situation to SOS Braconnage:
