Changes to the septic tank emptying procedure and pilot project

Published on March 6, 2023

All Quebec municipalities are obligated to enforce the Regulation respecting wastewater disposal systems for isolated dwellings (Q2, r.22.). This provincial regulation aims to put an end to contamination caused by faulty septic systems. Please note that the following items will be subject to special attention starting this year:

  • Section 13 regarding the emptying of septic tanks
  • Section 3.3 regarding the maintenance contract with the manufacturer, which must be filed with the municipality
  • Section 10, paragraph m. regarding the 2 access openings, which must extend to the soil surface

You can consult the provincial regulation Q-2, r.22 on legisquebec.gouv.qc.ca.

To complement the Regulation respecting wastewater disposal systems for isolated dwellings (Q-2, r.22.), amendments, in the form of a new municipal by-law, are expected soon.

Changes to the septic tank emptying procedure and pilot project

To assist our residents and to improve the follow-up of septic tank emptying and in accordance with section 13 of the Q-2, r.22, the Town will be divided into two sectors, West and East, to carry out the emptying in even and odd years. This change will result in a repeat emptying for the next 2 years for some addresses, and therefore means that if your septic tank was emptied last year, you may receive a visit from the pumping company again this year. In 2024, at the end of the pumping season, the division of the Town into two sectors will have been completed and each address will be in accordance with the regulations. Under no circumstances will it be possible to change the emptying year. A pilot project to conduct a sanitary survey of some faulty septic systems is being developed for this year.
