Canada Day Message from the Mayor

Published on June 30, 2021

To all of our residents marking July 1st in Baie-D’Urfé, this has been an exceptionally challenging year on many levels affecting our daily lives as well as tragic events unfolding through our country.

Each one of us may feel differently about this day and how to spend it.  Some will take the holiday to have a small gathering with family and friends as long-time restrictions slowly open.  Others may spend a quiet day of reflection regarding the situation of our Indigenous communities and Canada’s role.

Our town of Baie-D’Urfé, our province and country are made up of diverse backgrounds which are all part of its richness and unique character.  On this Canada Day, I will reflect on our history, the injustice of Indigenous communities including residential schools and the tragedy of those lost children with compassion. I will also take time to reflect on how we can do better to embrace and celebrate differences as part of being Canadian.

This Canada Day, let's reflect on what we can do to continue to make Canada better, all the while respecting and listening to those for whom it’s not a day of celebration.
