Baie-D’Urfé Mayor Denounces the Closure of Local SAQ Branch
Published on March 20, 2025
Baie-D’Urfé Mayor Heidi Ektvedt strongly opposes the unilateral decision by the SAQ to close its local branch, a decision that jeopardizes the community’s commercial vitality and was made without consideration for those affected.
“The closure of an SAQ without any prior consultation with local stakeholders is unworthy of a public corporation. We deplore this lack of consideration,” stated Mayor Ektvedt, who joins other mayors in denouncing the closure of several SAQ branches across the province.
The West Island of Montreal Chamber of Commerce supports Mayor Ektvedt’s stance and shares their concerns about the economic impact of this closure.
“The sudden closure of the local SAQ in Baie-D’Urfé, without prior consultation, is deeply concerning for the business community. Local retailers and residents alike rely on this establishment, not only for its products but also for the foot traffic it generates, which supports neighbouring businesses. The West Island Chamber of Commerce firmly believes that such decisions should involve transparent dialogue with local stakeholders to minimize economic disruption and preserve the vitality of our commercial zones,” emphasized Sophia Lavergne, General Manager of the West Island Chamber of Commerce.
A petition has been launched in support of these demands.
